What is Your Lie?

I’m not sure when the lie entered my life. But make no mistake, I have one and most likely you do as well. Maybe, like me, it’s more than one thing. Words that are whispered to your deepest, darkest places; probably something you would cringe to hear if you heard someone else say but you’ve come to believe it and live out of it even when your desire is the opposite. You may even have come to a place where you recognize you actually have it and still it remains.

You may even have read several books, written a blog, cried to a friend, talked to a counselor, prayed every night and still you struggle. Struggle with that one lie that just will not go away.

Last night I dreamed about one particular lie and was crying in my dream. Crying, because although in my dream I knew it was a lie, I could not believe the truth. When I awoke I was still crying. How can something be that powerful? Powerful enough to reside in my mind and haunt me in my sleep?

There are words that build up and words that tear down. “Your” lie will tear you down every time. It will make you believe the worst of yourself and cause you to believe that if anyone knew the “real you”… well, you know the rest. Yeah. Been there – bought the souvenir shirt and the overpriced food.

My guess is that your lie took up residence in your heart sometime in your teens. You probably didn’t even notice you had a “for rent” sign on your heart, much less that it had been taken down. Before you realized it the lie came in with all its furniture and accessories, redecorated, and settled in for life. A tenant that would put even the worst college roommate to shame.

Your lie may sound something like one of these:

  • You will never find a friend
  • No one will understand you
  • You are not beautiful
  • You’ve done too much to ever go back
  •  “Those people” do not care about you
  • You are alone
  • You are not that smart
  • You need someone to be happy
  • You are ugly
  • If you had more _____ you’d be happy (money, education, children, vacations, etc)
  • You are overweight/too skinny
  • No one could love you
  • No one will forgive you for that
  • If people really knew you, they wouldn’t be your friend
  • No one will know
  • Things will never change
  • I don’t deserve better
  • It’s only once. It will not hurt you.
  • It’s not that bad

Scary how easily most of those rolled off the top of my mind.

Fortunately there is a way to kick the lie(s) to the curb and fill that spot with something else. Filling your mind with God’s word and repeating His truths when the lies come will make them pack up and leave.

Truths like…

  • Psalm 139:13-14 – For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
  • Romans 8:38-39 – I am sure that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9 – He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’
  • John 8:31b-32 – If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
  • Hebrews 13:6 – The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Memorizing God’s truth so it’s with you at all times will be the only way to defeat the lie because it will come to you when you’re most vulnerable… even in your sleep.
